Jewish and orphaned in Persia, young Esther never fathomed she could become Queen, let alone be used by God for anything. Despite her childhood, that is precisely what she did. Esther is known for showing exceptional bravery and strength. She was willing to risk her own life to fulfill God’s purpose. This story reminds us that God has a unique purpose for each of our lives, no matter where we came from or what has happened to us.
Often, survivors of trafficking feel that God cannot use them because of what they have been through. We are here to tell them there is nothing further from the truth. We want them to know that they were made for such a time as this. Not only do we believe that the girls we serve are made for such a time as this, but our staff at the Esther House knows they are too. We are here to help guide these girls and free the next generation.
In May of 2023, we opened our first safe haven, the Esther House, to serve girls aged 12-17 who have survived sexual exploitation through trafficking. This expansion allows us to further our mission of providing a safe, welcoming, and trauma-informed environment that fosters hope, healing, and holism for these vulnerable children.
Future BMH homes are to serve other vulnerable populations such as; drug endangered children, sibling foster groups, teen parents, and youth aging out of the foster care system.
No child deserves a childhood that they have to heal from. Unfortunately, that does not always happen. During the healing process, hope is re-established. Hope reduces feelings of helplessness, increases happiness, reduces stress, and improves overall quality of life.
Studies show, after a traumatic event, the sooner a child regains the feeling of safety, the sooner they can begin to heal. Safety is the main objective of Trauma-Informed Care at Big Mama’s House. We also encourage healing and resiliency through transparency, peer support, collaboration with the child, and empowering them to restore their power and self-worth.
Our program promotes holistic healing by providing therapeutic activities, group discipleship, hygiene practices, life skills training, and other enrichment activities. We focus on five critical areas of development: physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual. Our goal is to help individuals build wholeness and autonomy.
