What We Do

Our Vision

At Big Mama’s House, our vision is to create a world where every child can grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, free from the negative impacts of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on them and their communities. We are dedicated to decreasing ACEs through education and forming solid partnerships in the community. We work to foster hope, facilitate healing, and provide holistic care for our children.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

We must fight ACEs because children grow up.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can have a long-lasting impact on families and communities. Early childhood stress impacts the brain. It affects the DNA. Children who experience abuse or neglect often grow up to face similar issues, such as domestic violence or substance abuse. Unfortunately, this cycle can continue for generations, causing their children to suffer from abuse and neglect and turn to drugs or alcohol. The correlation between ACEs and domestic and community violence, substance abuse, alcoholism, depression, and various diseases is undeniable.

ACEs profoundly impact our lives, communities, and the world. Regardless of where we live or how privileged we are, we cannot escape the devastating effects of ACEs. As individuals and as a society, we are responsible for caring for others, whether for humanitarian, religious, altruistic, or even selfish reasons. We must address this issue and protect our children and communities.

Understanding Your ACEs Score

What are your results saying?

Having a higher ACE score indicates a greater number of adverse experiences during childhood. This is associated with a higher likelihood of physical and psychological issues in the future. ACEs can affect individuals of all social and income levels and can have severe and costly effects throughout their lifetime. It is important to acknowledge the impact of trauma on individuals who have experienced significant adversity or many ACEs, but it is also important to recognize that they are not irreparably damaged. We can mitigate the lasting effects of trauma by reducing sources of stress for families, providing responsive relationships for children and adults, and strengthening essential life skills for everyone to adapt and thrive.

Taking a holistic approach to addressing trauma can potentially reduce the need for surgical intervention and medication. Trauma can have long-term consequences, such as a shorter lifespan, so it is crucial to confront past trauma and seek assistance if you experience frequent triggers or distress. By taking action now, you can potentially save your life and ensure a brighter future for future generations.
